The anime adaption of the beloved manga will be out this year as confirmed by TOHO!

A nation ruled by a monarch in the East has a large complex known as the hougong, or rear palace, where the emperor's consorts and female servants reside. Until she was abducted and forced into servitude at the rear palace, Maomao, an unassuming girl raised in an unassuming town by her apothecary father, never thought the rear palace would have anything to do with her.

Maomao has a quick wit, a keen mind, and a wealth of medical knowledge despite her unassuming appearance. That is her secret up until she runs into the chief eunuch, Jinshi, who is at least as perceptive as she is. In order for her to test the lady's food for poison, he sees through Maomao's facade and makes her a lady-in-waiting to none other than the Emperor's favored consort!

The Apothecary Diaries manga series by Natsu Hyga and Touko Shino will be adapted into an anime this year, TOHO animation and OLM recently revealed. Maomao, the primary character, will be voiced by Aoi Yki.
