Spontaneous Human Combustion is a disorderly phenomena that has long afflicted humanity, turning regular humans into flaming, vicious beasts known as Infernals. The second and third generations of Human Combustion became known as pyrokinetics—people endowed with the capacity to manipulate and control their flames while still being human. Infernals make up the first-generation stories of Human Combustion. The Tokyo Armed Forces, Fire Defense Agency, and Holy Church of Sol created the Special Fire Force as their response to the Infernal menace and to ascertain the source. Shinra Kusakabe, a third-generation pyrokinetic who goes by the moniker "Devil's Footprints" due to his explosive capacity to spontaneously fire his feet, joins the energetic Special Fire Force Company 8. Shinra is resolved to become a hero who will save the lives of those endangered by the flame horror while upholding the brigade's obligation to put out the flames of the Infernals and lay their souls to rest.
