Rena Ryg, Rika Furude, Satoko Hj, Mion Sonozaki, and their twin sister Shion are among the classmates Keiichi Maebara makes friends with after relocating to the village of Hinamizawa () in June 1983. The yearly Watanagashi Festival, which honors the local deity Oyashiro, is immediately made known to Keiichi. At first, Hinamizawa seems serene and tranquil, but just before the festival, Keiichi discovers that killings and disappearances have routinely occurred on the festival's day for the last four years. The superstitious villagers have come to refer to this string of incidences as the "Oyashiro Curse" because they are yet unresolved. Police find the burnt body of Miyo Takano, a nurse at the local clinic, and the corpse of Jir Tomitake, a visiting freelance photographer who appears to have pulled his throat out with his bare hands the day after this year's festival. In the majority of the game's chapters, Keiichi or one of his pals makes an effort to learn more about Hinamizawa and the Oyashiro Curse but fails due to paranoia and homicidal wrath. Rika's body is discovered in the Oyashiro-themed family shrine a few days after the festival. The media blames a discharge of swamp gas for the catastrophe that strikes the community that day and kills everyone there.
