PLOT
The plot centers on the lives of two young men whose paths cross during the political unrest and social unrest in Japan in the late 1800s. While Manjiro Ibuya is a samurai who is a steadfast defender of honor and tradition, Dr. Ryoan Tezuka is a medical student who is drawn to the radical new of Western medicine. O-Seki, the daughter of a revered Temple priest, is the woman they both meet and fall in love with. Ryoan marries, settles down, and takes over his father's medical practice while his idealistic outlook progressively fades. Manjiro is rising through the levels of samurai society in the meantime, and the shogun initially assigns him the delicate role of overseeing an American envoy before later ordering farmers to become an armed infantry.
