PLOT
The story takes place in a make-believe universe where humans lost the ability to reproduce and genuinely die fifteen years prior. Those who have passed away still exist despite harm and deterioration. Legend has it that after leaving his creations, God left them with one last gift in the form of "gravekeepers," weird creatures with the power to provide the living dead repose. Ai, a 12-year-old gravekeeper, is one such person. When Hampnie Hambart, an immortal gunslinger, massacres the citizens of her little village, her life is changed forever. Ai is left with nowhere to turn and must rely on Hampnie, who teaches her the truth about both of them. She then embarks on a journey, carrying out her responsibilities as a gravekeeper, seeking to understand why the world has descended into such a mess, and expressing her wish to save the world God has abandoned. She meets new individuals along the way, including Julie, a childhood friend of Hampnie's, the gravekeeper Scar, Alice, a mystery lad, and Dee, a ghostly witch.
