PLOT
The protagonist of the tale is Mai Tokiha, an apparently unremarkable high school student who recently enrolled with her younger brother Takumi at the elite Fuuka Academy. There are several mysteries at the prestigious Fuuka Academy involving both fellow students and faculty. When they get to the Academy, Mai discovers that she is attached to a Child—a hybrid of the spiritual and mechanical that can only be called forth and commanded by females who have the HiME mark. One of the twelve girls with the aforementioned mark, Mai is informed that she must use her ability to defend everyone against Orphans, terrifying monsters with skills akin to the HiME's Children. Due to her protective position toward her brother, Mai is first very hesitant to become involved, but the other HiME soon start to emerge around her, each with very different motivations and purposes for using (or not using) their talents. Mai joins the other HiME's fight against the Orphans as they become increasingly numerous and violent in order to defend everyone nearby, including her friends who wind up being involved in the struggle as well. Mai and the other HiME quickly learn that the Orphans are not the only threat they must contend with, and once the root of everything is discovered, they are forced to confront the terrible truth about their fate.
