PLOT
The royal vizier of the Middle Eastern city of Agrabah, Jafar, is a vicious sorcerer who is searching for a lamp buried inside the Cave of Wonders. The cave's gatekeeper informs him that only one person—"the diamond in the rough," whom Jafar subsequently recognizes as a small street kid by the name of Aladdin—is fit to enter. Princess Jasmine, meanwhile, is concerned about having to wed a prince for legal reasons rather than out of love. She sneaks out of the palace and is saved by Aladdin and his pet monkey Abu from an enraged merchant. Jafar instructs the palace guards to seize Aladdin while a link between Aladdin and Jasmine grows; during this time, Jasmine makes herself known. She confronts Jafar to demand that he release Aladdin, but he lies and says that Aladdin has been put to death. Jafar frees Aladdin and Abu while posing as an elderly beggar and brings them to the cave while directing them to get the lamp. Aladdin is allowed entry, but the gatekeeper tells him to just touch the lamp. Aladdin discovers a magic carpet and a lamp within, but Abu greedily takes a sizable jewel, causing the cave to cave in. Jafar receives the lamp from Aladdin and throws it, along with Abu, into the cave that is about to collapse, but not before Abu steals it back. Aladdin, who is imprisoned, rubs the lamp and encounters the genie who resides inside. Although Aladdin tricks the Genie into releasing everyone from the cave without using a wish, the Genie grants Aladdin three wishes. Aladdin vows to use his dying wish to rescue the Genie after learning that he wants to be freed from captivity. In order to court Jasmine, Aladdin uses his first wish to transform into a prince.
