Chu Yuan, who is 18 years old, is put under a lot of pressure to succeed as the future emperor of Chu State. He needs to exercise caution when making judgments, especially given the current turmoil along the Chu and Xinan border. However, he is relieved of responsibility when Duan Baiyue, the youthful Xinan King, put down the uprising on his own. Chu Yuan is spared an unimaginable amount of suffering as a result of his assistance, and the locals now praise Duan Baiyue as their hero. After two years, Xinan's power has increased, fueling suspicions that Duan Baiyue will soon seize control of Chu State. Chu Yuan is enraged and contemplates a promise made in the distant past as he stands in front of a winter plum tree. When a visiting duke of Ahnu, an ally of Chu State, is discovered dead in Chu's streets, the strain finally breaks.
