Shintarou Kisaragi is compelled to leave his room for the first time in two years on the scorching summer day of August 14. Shintarou Kisaragi accidently spills cola all over his keyboard while arguing with the virtual female Ene who resides within his computer. They try to find a substitute online, but because of the Obon celebration, most stores are closed, so they are forced to go to the neighborhood department store. Shintarou has a terrible fear of going outside, but the idea of life without his computer makes him feel even worse. He simply happens to get into a horrific hostage situation on the day he decides to venture outside. Fortunately, Shintarou receives help from the "Mekakushi Dan," a group of young people with enigmatic eye abilities. He and Ene are compelled to join their group as a result. The mystery that binds them together is gradually revealed as each member's past is revealed.
