PLOT

Earth is guiding human civilisation toward definite extinction in 2187 as a result of global warming. People build dome-shaped cities since they are unable to live on Earth's surface. However, as time passes, war and unstable ground conditions divide the domes, and people eventually lose touch. Teenager Shu lives in Datania, a dome-shaped metropolis under the rule of Zero, a data program. The children that reside there are made to live and work as programmed drones using the reset system with the assistance of his human helper Nines, and subsequently Berk. As a result, the kids have no emotions, needs, or human instincts. The first episode of the series features Shu, who longs to see the ocean, helping his buddies escape from Datania with the aid of underground rebels from Datania known as The Returners, Ein, May, and Dolly. Shu travels with the Returners to Amaroute, another dome city that they consider to be a superior location to call home. Along the way, Shu discovers a planet for the first time and joins his Returner buddies in battling Zero and his henchmen who are hunting DT, a particular substance found in humans that Shu also possesses. When the Returners arrive in Amaroute, they find that it is just like Datania and that Zero controls it, with a clone of Shu helping this time. Shu then discovers that Datania and Amaroute are working together to develop a rocket that will safely launch Zero into orbit before a generator that has been preventing worldwide flooding malfunctions and the earth is engulfed in a massive tidal wave. After Amaroute is destroyed, Shu and his companions head back to Datania in order to confront Zero and save the city's residents as well as the other runners. Shu has the brilliant idea that because the Rocket there can't be finished in time, they should make it into an Ark and ride out the flood before the tidal surge arrives. The project is finished, and everyone is loaded on board, but a technical issue prevents it from taking off just as the generator that had been keeping the flood from happening finally fails. Shu and his pals are forced to race against time to liberate the generator. In an unexpected twist, the tidal wave strikes before the Ark is visible being released, leaving the audience to speculate about Shu and everyone else on board.
