PLOT

A white orb is produced by the Beholder, an entity from another realm (later named Fushi by a rambunctious young girl). Fushi first appears as a boulder and subsequently as a dying polar wolf. A white-haired child who lives alone introduces himself to Fushi and believes him to be his pet wolf, Joaan. Fushi assumes the boy's shape after he passes away. When he visits Ninannah, he encounters March, a little child who was chosen as Oniguma, a big white bearsacrifice. ,'s Fushi is given a name by March, who also teaches him the basics of speech and hand motions. After defeating Oniguma, Fushi, March, Parona (who represents March's older sister) and the elderly woman Pioran are carried prisoner to Yanome by Hayase. They manage to flee, but March dies and turns into a ghost. Parona and Fushi part ways, and Ninannah is left on her own to flee an increasingly desperate Hayase. Pioran is joined by Fushi, who starts to speak in a childlike manner. A Nokker, a plant-like creature that can take Fushi's forms and memories, attacks them as they make their way to Takunaha. By killing it, Fushi regains his memories. Fushi encounters Gugu in Takunaha, a young man who lost his face in an accident after rescuing Rean. Following Gugu's rescue of Fushi from a second Nokker, Fushi, Gugu, and Rean become close friends. Fushi gives up making or changing things for four years in order to live as a human. Gugu was slain while sacrificing himself to defend Rean, who turns into a spirit like March, from a Nokker attack. In fear of Nokker attacks, Fushi and Pioran depart Takunaha.
