PLOT
Nazi soldier Klaus Schmidt observes juvenile prisoner Erik Lehnherr bend a metal fence with his mind in the Auschwitz death camp in 1944 after being separated from his mother. Schmidt commands Erik to shift a coin on his desk in his office; when Erik is unable to do so, Schmidt kills his mother. Erik's magnetic power manifests as a result of his sadness and rage, killing two guards and obliterating the chamber. Separately, in a house in Westchester County, New York, young shapeshifter Raven and kid telepath Charles Xavier meet. Raven has blue skin and scales in her native form. He asks her to live with his family as his foster sister because he is overjoyed to have met someone who is "different," like himself. In 1962, Xavier receives his degree from the University of Oxford as Erik searches for Schmidt to exact revenge on his mother. American Army Colonel Hendry is followed by CIA agent Moira MacTaggert to the Hellfire Club in Las Vegas, where she encounters Schmidt (now known as Sebastian Shaw) together with mutant telepath Emma Frost, cyclone-producing Riptide, and teleporter Azazel. Shaw threatens Hendry, who is then transported to the Joint War Room and urges the placement of nuclear missiles in Turkey. Later, Hendry is killed by Shaw, an energy-absorbing mutant whose abilities have kept him youthful.
