PLOT
In 1013 AD, the young Thorfinn works for Askeladd in the hopes of challenging him to a fight and killing him in retaliation for their attack on him in 1002 AD while traveling to England, which resulted in the murder of his father. During the Danish invasion of London by the British in 1013 AD, Askeladd's company was hired as mercenaries by Danish King Sweyn and Thorkell the Tall, Thorfinn's combative uncle who served with Thors in the Jomsvikings. Askeladd's business kidnaps Prince Canute after Thorkel kidnaps Sweyn's son and plans to sell him to either side for profit. As a direct descendant of Artorius, Askeladd alters his original plan in order to protect his mother's country of Wales from invasion. While Sweyn wanted for his son to pass away so that his oldest son Harald would succeed him and avert a division among the Danes, Askeladd learned that Sweyn succeeded in making Canute forceful. When the king reveals his intention to attack Wales, Askeladd is ultimately compelled to make a sacrifice by killing Sweyn in front of the crowd, pretending to be insane as Canute executes him, so the prince might rule uncontested over Dane-occupied England. However, Thorfinn wounds Canute in an attempt on the prince's life and is given a life sentence of servitude by an empathic Canute.
