PLOT
In the 1840s, Tom Sawyer, an orphan, resides in the Missouri town of St. Petersburg with his aunt Polly and half-brother Sid. He frequently skips school to play or go swimming because he is a fun-loving boy. Aunt Polly makes him whitewash her fence the following day as a punishment after catching him sneaking home late on a Friday night and learning that he had been in a fight. Tom cleverly uses reverse psychology to convince a few of the local kids that completing his tiresome task is fun in exchange for the "honor" of trading him modest trinkets and riches. Later, Tom exchanges the mementos with pupils in his Sunday school class for tickets that are awarded for Scripture memorization. Despite being one of the worst students in the class and understanding little about Scripture, he manages to earn enough tickets to receive a treasured Bible from the teacher, inspiring envy among the other students and a mixture of pride and shock among the adults.
