PLOT
Junior high school student Lain Iwakura, who is rather shy and introverted, lives in suburban Japan with her middle-class family, which includes her uncommunicative older sister Mika, her emotionally distant mother, and her computer-obsessed father. After she learns that girls from her school have gotten an email from a deceased student, Chisa Yomoda, and pulls out her old computer to check for the same message, the status quo of her life is upended by a series of weird occurrences. Lain receives an email from Chisa claiming that she is still alive and has simply "abandoned her physical self" deep into the Wired itself, where she claims to have discovered "God." In a story that tackles themes of consciousness, perception, and the nature of reality, Lain is then drawn into a sequence of mysterious and surreal events that force her to delve more into the network's secret.
