Adapting the traditional Chinese story Journey to the West, When Heaven and Earth were one and humans and demons—the youkai—lived side by side in harmony, it was a time of chaos. In this realm of Togenkyo, the utopia known as Shangri-la, the pillars of culture and religion were raised and strengthened. But right now, a powerful evil threatens peace in this vast continent. Someone is trying to combine human science with youkai magic in India, thousands of miles to the west, in order to bring the youkai lord Gyumaoh back to life. The youkai's souls have been poisoned by this prohibited ritual, turning them into mindless monsters that are spreading throughout Shangri-La. The only hope is with these four storied heroes: A high priest with poor morals, Genjo Sanzo. Son Goku, the greedy and naughty Monkey King, was recently released after serving 500 years in prison. Water sprite Sha Gojyo is addicted to terrible ladies and nice cigarettes. The renowned demon slayer Cho Hakkai (formerly known as Cho Gonou) with his metamorphosing dragon Hakuryu. These unlikely friends, brought together by fate, must journey together... INTO THE WEST... to save Shangri-la!
