PLOT
The odd bond between Ayato Kamina and Haruka Shitow is the series' most significant story point. Although Haruka first seems to be a stranger to Ayato, the series later reveals that they were friends before the tale even started. The Bähbem Foundation assisted in the unwitting conception of Ayato, a boy who now lives in Tokyo with his adoptive mother, Maya Kamina. Ayato and Haruka first met while on a trip outside of Tokyo, and their friendship remained once they got back to school in Tokyo. Haruka's family name at the time was Mishima. However, Haruka and her expectant mother were away on vacation when what was later referred to as the Tokyo Jupiter event occurred, while Ayato was apprehended inside the city. After giving birth to Megumi, Haruka's sister, years later, Haruka's mother remarried, changing their last name to Shitow. In the meantime, Maya altered Ayato's memories to remove Haruka from them. The series makes it apparent that all of the people living in Tokyo Jupiter are under the same form of mental control and believe they are the only survivors of humanity following a terrible war. Ayato's artwork reflects the visions of Haruka that plague him. In order to help Ayato, Ixtli, RahXephon's spirit, also assumes Haruka's physical characteristics and family name (Mishima), but uses a new given name, Reika.
