Every person in the post-apocalyptic society of Alcia had a unique "Count" imprinted on their bodies, which kept track of a significant part of their lives and served as a measure of their value. Their social position in relation to others is determined by this Count, with those wearing a lesser Count unable to defy a higher Count's demands. The person will be pulled into the "Abyss" and declared to be dead for all eternity when this Count falls to 0. The Althing was the name of the system in charge of these matters. Young Hina Farrow's Count, which was first displayed as 441, represents how many hundreds of kilometers she has traveled. She has been traveling alone and looking for someone named the Legendary Ace for the last five years ever since her mother was dragged into the Abyss and left her with a final wish. During this time, she has been carrying a mysterious sphere with a 10,000 Count on it, which was later identified as one of the seven original Ballots. When Hina saw Licht Bach, a mysterious masked pervert with a negative -999 Count, her path abruptly changed. Licht, who was later revealed to be a real Legendary Ace, saved Hina from an Alcian Royal Army impostor who claimed to be an Ace, but he denied being the one Hina was looking for.
