PLOT
Takashi Natsume, who inherited this talent from his grandmother Reiko Natsume, has been able to see ghosts for as long as he can remember. His upbringing was lonely as a result of this ability because kids his age thought he was unusual. Additionally, he had been passed down through the family. Reiko left her Book of Friends, a book that listed the names of spirits she had coerced into submission, to her grandson as part of her estate. Because Takashi owns the Book of Friends, which is treasured in the afterlife, a steady stream of benevolent and malignant spirits follow him. Takashi spends his time freeing the numerous spirits that come to him for assistance and destroying the contracts that Reiko made. On the other hand, evil spirits attempt to assassinate him in order to possess the book, which is when Madara (also known by Natsume as Nyanko-sensei) enters the picture. Even though Madara's motivation to acquire the Book of Friends is purportedly his own, he acts as Natsume's protector and type of spiritual advisor. Later, he starts to grow closer to Takashi, who develops a similar connection with Madara.
