Gladiator arenas have existed in various forms all over the world since the Edo era of Japan. Rich businessmen and traders hire gladiators to compete in unarmed combat competitions, or Kengan matches, in these arenas, where the winner takes all. Yamashita Kazuo, a typical Japanese salaryman working for Nogi Group, observes a brawl between two unidentified fighters in an alley. Due to his victory over the Nogi Group's previous fighter in the street fight, Tokita "Ashura" Ohma, one of the fighters, is sought out by Nogi Hideki, the CEO of the Nogi Group. Ohma, who enters these arenas simply to destroy his opponents, is managed by Kazuo. His amazing ability to destroy his adversaries attracts the interest of powerful businessmen, which results in Hideki inviting him to participate in the Kengan Annihilation Tournament. The top CEOs in Japan participate in this competition, and the victor is awarded the chairmanship of the Kengan Association, which carries a great deal of authority and status. Ohma is put to the test as the competition progresses as he battles his mysterious past coming back to haunt him and Kazuo strives to control him and determine the real reason he was invited to the competition.
