Sorata Kanda wakes up to another chaotic morning as one of the students living in the Sakura Dormitory, a dorm affiliated with Suimei University of the Arts for trouble-making students. He got put in the dorm after taking in stray cats he would find on the street. His teacher Chihiro Sengoku who also lives at the dorm tells him to meet up with her cousin Mashiro Shiina and bring her back to the dorm since Mashiro is transferring to the school. Chihiro gives him a photograph of Mashiro when she was a small child and no other explanations...
