PLOT
Mario and Luigi, two Italian-American brothers, just opened a plumbing company in Brooklyn, much to the chagrin of their bitter ex-employer Spike and the displeasure of their father. Mario and Luigi travel down to address a big water main break they saw on the news, but they are separated when they get dragged into a Warp Pipe. Luigi lands in the Dark Lands, controlled by the villainous Koopa king Bowser, while Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom, ruled by Princess Peach. When Peach rejects his proposal of marriage, Bowser threatens to use a Super Star to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom. To intimidate Mario, whom he views as a rival for Peach's affection, he imprisons Luigi. When Toad first meets Mario, he leads him to Peach. Peach permits Mario and Toad to accompany her on her journey and prepares to join forces with the ape Kongs to help fend off Bowser. Peach also tells how, as a baby, she wound up in the Mushroom Kingdom, where the Toads adopted her and she later rose to become their leader. King Cranky Kong of the Jungle Kingdom agrees to assist if Mario overcomes his son Donkey Kong in a duel. Donkey Kong is quite strong, but Mario uses a Cat Suit to overcome him.
