PLOT

Miserly businessman Ebenezer Scrooge declines his nephew Fred's invitation to the traditional Christmas dinner party on Christmas Eve 1843 in London, and he also declines to give money to the needy. Scrooge grudgingly agrees to Bob Cratchit's request for a day off on Christmas Day so that he can spend time with his family. Scrooge runs into the ghost of his deceased business partner Jacob Marley, who is encased in thick shackles, as he makes his way home that night. Scrooge receives a warning from Marley to modify his evil ways or face a harsher destiny. Marley warns Scrooge that he will be haunted by three spirits over the course of three nights before departing. The Ghost of Christmas Past visits Scrooge and transports him back in time to his lonely youth spent in a boarding school. The spirit then depicts Fred's future mother, Fan, his loving younger sister, his employment with Fezziwig, and his engagement to Belle, who broke it off when he started to get obsessed with money. Scrooge is overcome and puts out the spirit with his candle snuffer cap before being propelled back to his house.
