PLOT

Bullies frequently pick on the weak and defenseless, like Yuugi Mutou. Anzu Mazaki, his lovely childhood friend, is always there to defend him, but he can't always rely on her. Despite often causing Yuugi problems, Katsuya Jonouchi, who is virtually always accompanied by his verbal sparring partner Hiroto Honda, doesn't seem to be a bad person either. But above all, Yuugi longs for a loyal buddy who will always understand him and never desert him. A piece of ancient Egyptian relic that was brought into his grandfather's gaming store is the Millennium Puzzle, which Yuugi treasures. He finishes the puzzle, believing that doing so will grant him his wish, and in doing so, a new personality—the soul of the "King of Games"—emerges within him. Yuugi's antithesis is represented by the new personality known as Yami Yuugi, who is dark, twisted, powerful, and dependable. When someone treats him unfairly, Yami Yuugi assumes control of Yuugi's body and compels them to play a "Shadow Game." The stakes are great because the loser will taste the evil that dwells inside their own heart.
