Midgar, an all-girls academy, became well-known because Yuu Mononobe was the only male student it had ever admitted. Midgar is renowned for much more than that, though, since it is a school exclusively for a group of female students known as D's. They are all highly skilled at producing dark matter and turning it into deadly weapons. The D's only began appearing when a number of mysterious, destructive beasts known as "Dragons" started manifesting all across the world 25 years ago. They mysteriously emerged, then vanished overnight. As a result of the Dragons' terrible legacy, some girls started to show up at birth with symbols on their bodies and skills mimicking those utilized by the Dragons themselves.
