PLOT
The end of the tanuki's tricks coincided with the start of the Meiji era. Before modern technology made their attempts to trick people ineffective, these raccoon dogs loved to disguise themselves as humans. However, Mameda, a young tanuki girl, is determined to carry on her father's tradition and travels to Osaka in an effort to deceive people. Mameda's failure to trick even one person leads to her being pursued by an enraged mob, as other members of her village had feared. She discovers a rakugo performance being given by Bunko Daikokutei, a master of the genre, after taking refuge at a theater. Mameda is captivated by the vivid images produced by the rakugoka's acting and decides she wants to train to be Bunko's apprentice since she loves this form of storytelling!
