PLOT
Mages randomly receive one of the four "crests" that indicate the range of their magical power at birth. The world's strongest sage, Gaius, was armed with a crest that specialized in creation and achieved the pinnacle of his ability. Despite his overpowering might, he is dissatisfied with his skills and longs for the close-ranged target. Gaius resolves to reincarnate a very long time in the future in an effort to modify his fate despite knowing that a person's crest cannot be changed. Gaius is resurrected as Mathias Hildesheimer thousands of years later and succeeds in getting his long-desired crest. He is shocked to see that magic has significantly diminished since those days and that the once-commonplace methods are now little more than a speck of folklore. Furthermore, the peak he toiled to reach is now regarded as the weakest, simply known as the "Crest of Failure." However, Mathias naturally goes above and above all expectations. He enrolls in the Second Academy of the royal capital and succeeds in every test that is put in front of him. But soon after, Mathias learns that demons were responsible for humanity's descent into magical mediocrity, and he sets out to permanently fix the effects of his millennia-long absence.
