PLOT

There once was a writer by the name of Drosselmeyer who had the ability to bring his novels to life. However, he passed away before he could complete his last story, The Prince and the Raven, leaving the two main characters in an unending conflict. The Prince pursued the Raven after he eventually broke free and entered the outside world after many years. Prince Siegfried used his sword to sever his own heart, which resulted in the loss of all his memories and feelings, in order to shut away the Raven's evil. As a ghost, Drosselmeyer decides that the narrative must come to a conclusion. The empty remnant of Siegfried, Mytho, has fallen in love with a small duck, which is how he discovers it. He gives her a magical pendant that she may use to change into Princess Tutu, an elegant ballerina who appears in the story, and then into a regular human girl. It is Duck's responsibility as Tutu to gather up the broken pieces of Mytho's heart and give them back to him. However, not everyone desires for Mytho to regain his heart. Rue, the Raven's daughter who was resurrected as a human, also fell in love with him but is concerned that if he has a heart, he might not feel the same way about her. Her capacity to change into Princess Kraehe, Tutu's evil twin, is unleashed by her desire to prevent him from regaining his feelings. Fakir, the child who discovered Mytho and looked after him after he escaped the narrative, tries to stop Tutu as well because he thinks that if the story continues, the Raven would reappear and Mytho will have to risk his life battling it once more. Duck also discovers that a key element of Princess Tutu's legend is that she must avoid confessing her love to Mytho lest she transform into a particle of light and disappear. It becomes evident, though, that Mytho wants his heart to be returned, so she persists in spite of Fakir and Kraehe's intervention. Eventually, Fakir chooses to support Tutu and respects Mytho's decision. She even learns that Tutu is actually a Duck and becomes close with her as a result. Additionally, he discovers that he is a Drosselmeyer descendant, giving him the authority to bring his writings to life. Rue finds out she's not the Raven's daughter, but a human child he stole to serve him. After most of Mytho's heart is returned to him, the seal trapping the Raven begins to break. Finally able to feel love again, Mytho realizes he loves Rue – just as the Raven kidnaps her. Duck discovers her pendant is the final shard, meaning she must give up her life as a human to return it. She eventually finds the courage to do so, and becomes a humble duck again. Mytho and the Raven battle once more. When the fight turns bleak, Mytho considers shattering his heart to seal the monster away again. Duck begins dancing to show him he must not give up. As she does, Fakir writes a story about how she never stops, no matter how many times the Raven's minions attack her. Together they create hope, which gives Mytho the strength he needs to rescue Rue and defeat the Raven. Mytho asks Rue to be his princess and they return to his kingdom inside the story. Duck and Fakir continue their relationship, even though she's stuck in her duck form. With nothing left to do, Drosselmeyer departs in search of another story.
