"Mo Dao Zu Shi" (also known as "The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" or "The Founder of Diabolism") is a popular Chinese animation (donghua) series based on the web novel of the same name written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The series falls into the genres of action, adventure, mystery, comedy, historical, supernatural, and xianxia (a genre that combines Chinese folklore, martial arts, and magic). The story is set in a world of magic and cultivation and follows the life of Wei Wuxian, who, through a series of unfortunate events, becomes known as the feared Yiling Patriarch, the grandmaster of the Demonic Sect. His unconventional methods and beliefs cause him to be feared and hated by the cultivation world, eventually leading to his death. However, 13 years later, Wei Wuxian is reincarnated and returns to a world greatly changed from what he remembers. Alongside his old friend (and rumored lover) Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian finds himself unraveling past mysteries, clearing his name, and facing battles against both undead creatures and prejudiced cultivators.
