PLOT

Aoi Tsubaki, who was left by her mother when she was a little child, has always possessed the power to see "ayakashi"—spirits from the Hidden Realm. Her grandfather, Shirou Tsubaki, who had the same power, took her under his care and taught her how to coexist peacefully with the ayakashi. When her grandfather dies unexpectedly, the independent Aoi must continue her college studies with little more than her culinary skills as defense against the human-eating spirits. She decides to feed the starving creatures who come into her path in the hopes that the ayakashi won't mistake her or other ignorant people for a nice meal. Aoi is taken to the Hidden Realm after feeding a mysterious ayakashi her lunch. There, the ayakashi reveals himself to be Oodanna, the "Master Innkeeper," an ogre-god. She discovers there that she was used as security for her grandfather's debt of one hundred million yen and that she must now marry Oodanna in order to atone for her grandfather's carelessness. Bravely refusing, Aoi chooses to negotiate a settlement on her own terms, paying off the debt by starting a restaurant in Oodanna's inn. The plot of Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi follows Aoi as she uses the only tool she has against the ayakashi—her delectable cooking—to influence and change their lives.
