PLOT
Shuichi Nitori is a fifth-grader who transfers to a new school at the beginning of Wandering Son. Another student, the tall, boyish Yoshino Takatsuki, rapidly wins her friendship. Yoshino quickly finds out that Shuichi wants to be a girl. He admits to having a similar wish to be a male out of friendship. Two other girls in the class, Saori Chiba and Kanako Sasa, also become close friends with Shuichi. Shuichi immediately wins Saori's attention, and she persistently prods her to dress more femininely. Shuichi meets Makoto Ariga, a classmate their age who is also an out transgender female, after Yoshino, Shuichi, and their friends start sixth grade. An adult trans woman named Yuki who lives with a cis man named Shiina makes friends with Shuichi and Yoshino. Maho, Shuichi's older sister, starts modeling and ultimately befriends Tamaki Sat, Anna Suehiro, and Maiko, a young model she greatly admires. Shuichi admits to having a crush on Yoshino but Yoshino rejects him because Maho has a boyfriend named Riku Seya. When Saori finds out, she admits that she likes Shuichi but that he, too, is unable to reciprocate her feelings. Due to this, Shuichi's buddies split apart as they get ready to start junior high school.
