The year 2035, when Manabi Straight! is set, sees a sharp decline in the birth rate. As a result, due to a lack of pupils available to teach, several schools are closing. The all-girl Seioh Private High School is not an exception to the significantly low morale in schools that has recently occurred. When Manami Amamiya, the main character, enrolls at Seioh High School, the narrative starts. Manami is an energetic girl with an optimistic outlook on life. She frequently yells her own mantra, Massugu Go!, to inspire herself to move on in life. The lone student council member and secretary Mika Inamori tries to get students to join the council on Manami's first day of class, but she is first met with an uninterested audience. Manami, though, indicates a desire to lead the student council. Manami, who had just heard Seioh's school song for the first time the day before, starts singing it to demonstrate to the faculty how much she wants to be in charge of the student body. Manami is introduced as the new president of the student council at the song's finale and is warmly welcomed by everyone in the school. Although Manami and Mika were the only formal members at first, the plot of the novel shows Manami cooperating with Mika and three other classmates—Mutsuki Uehara, Mei Etoh, and Momoha Odori—on student council issues. Manami and her pals started making plans for the upcoming student festival after refurbishing the student council chamber.
