Candy spent her early years there after being adopted by the Pony's Home orphanage near Lake Michigan at the beginning of the 20th century. They would both set off on their respective life adventures in the United States, where Terry sought a career as a rising star actor in New York while Candy studied to become a nurse in Chicago during the time of World War I. Susanna, an actress and fellow member of his theater group, started to like Terry. Susanna disabled herself while saving Terry's life during a mishap that happened during a rehearsal. Her acting career was shattered by her injury. Susanna struggled with depression and made an attempt at suicide because she didn't want to bother anyone or destroy her job. Terry felt guilty but was split between seeing Candy again and caring for Susanna. Candy made the decision to put her own happiness before Terry's happiness and left him after she learned what had happened without Terry ever telling her. Terry had already decided to stay with Susanna, and Candy was aware of this because he had never sought Candy's advice before making this choice. Following that, Candy went back to Chicago to carry on with her life. By happenstance, she ended up caring for Albert, who had lost his memories following an Italian rail bombing connected to World War I. During Albert's amnesiac state, Candy and Albert made the decision to live together, and they did so for a number of years. Nevertheless, Albert eventually regained his memory and told Candy who he really was. Candy found out that he was also the Prince on the Hill at the conclusion of the tale.
