Akira Okudaira, an incoming high school student at Fujigaya Girls Academy, reconnects with her childhood friend Fumi Manjme at the beginning of Sweet Blue Flowers after a ten-year absence. Fumi is a student at Matsuoka Girl's High School where she rapidly befriends Yasuko Sugimoto, an attractive third-year student. Akira joins the theatre club at her school together with her classmate and friend Kyko Ikumi, who is in love with Yasuko but is rejected by her. Akira gets to know K Sawanoi, Kyko's nominal fiancé. Fumi and Yasuko start dating, and when Fumi comes out to Akira, he is initially unsure of how to react but attempts to be supportive of the couple. Fumi lends a hand with her pals Yko Honatsugi, Misako Yasuda, and Miwa Motegi as Akira's theatre club performs a Wuthering Heights adaption for a drama festival. When Fumi finds out that Yasuko's sister Kazusa is getting married to Masanori Kagami, a teacher at Fujigaya, Yasuko breaks up with her. When the wedding, Yasuko makes the decision to study abroad in London after she graduates. Miwa and Akira's older brother Shinobu begin dating, and to Akira's humiliation, Fumi admits that she was her first love. An enthusiastic first-year girl by the name of Haruka no joins the Fujigaya drama club as Akira and her pals begin their second year of high school. Akira and Kyko are separated into different classes, and in Akira's new class, Ryko Ueda is a tall girl. Akira, Kyko, and Ryko take the lead roles in the high school division of Fujigaya's production of Rokumeikan, but Ryko only agrees to act because Akira agrees to act with her. Haruka and Fumi become friends, and Haruka confides in Fumi that she thinks her sister Orie, who is older, might enjoy women. Fumi asks Akira for help because she doesn't know how to react, but she ultimately decides to profess her love to her. Although Kyko does not want K to end their engagement, he does so in the end. The play runs smoothly, and everyone compliments the actresses on their work. After giving it some serious thought, Akira offers to Fumi that they go out together over the summer break.
