PLOT
The plot, which takes place in the not-too-distant future in a place named Heartland City, centers on Yuma Tsukumo, a teenage duelist who, while being an amateur, aspires to win the Duel Monsters championship. One day, Astral, a mysterious ghost, appears before him and aids him in winning a combat with Shark, his opponent. Yuma is told by Astral that he is looking for his lost memories, which have been turned into 100 Xyz Monster cards known as Numbers and dispersed all over the world. The Duelists who own the Numbers have the power to subdue their worst cravings and take control of them. Astral works together with Yuma to locate the Number cards in an effort to reclaim his memories. Yuma and Astral are given the ability to combine their energies through the power of ZEXAL after encountering a boy named Kite Tenjo who is chasing the Numbers. Yuma faces a number of opponents when he enters the World Duel Carnival competition, including the vengeance-seeking Vetrix and the insane Dr. Faker who wants the Numbers for their own advantage.
