PLOT
A bright young woman with aspirations of serving her country as a government official, Shuurei Kou is the daughter of an aristocratic but poor family. Her desire, however, is out of reach because women are not permitted in such positions. Shuurei is forced to take on odd tasks to make ends meet while her father toils away at the palace as an archivist for a meager wage. Later, a surprise visit transforms her life. Ryuuki Shi, the next emperor, is known for slacking off on his tasks and favoring the company of men. Shuurei is asked to help. She eagerly accepts the opportunity to spend six months as the young emperor's consort since she is enticed by the rich reward. Fortunately, Seiran Shi, her dependable buddy, joins her as Ryuuki's bodyguard, so she is not alone. As Shuurei adjusts to her new life and the problems it presents, court life and politics prove problematic as she attempts to make the new emperor a competent ruler. Saiunkoku Monogatari, which is set in a fictional nation, is centered on the idea of meaningful leadership, its challenges, and the benefits that go along with a strong country.
