PLOT
An alien civilization known as the Gamilas (Gamilons in the English Star Blazers dub) attacks Earth in the year 2199 with radioactive meteorite bombs, making the planet's surface uninhabitable. The extinction of humanity is predicted to occur within a year. Humanity has relocated into vast underground cities, but the radioactivity is progressively affecting them as well. Earth possesses a space fleet, but they are completely outclassed by Gamilas and lack interstellar capability. Everything appears to be lost until a message capsule from an unknown spacecraft that landed on Mars is found. The Faster Than Light Engine Blueprints and a Request for Assistance from Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar in the Large Magellanic Cloud are both found inside the capsule. According to her, the Cosmo-Cleaner D (Cosmo DNA), a machine on her planet, can repair Earth's radiation damage. In the ruins of the enormous Japanese battleship Yamato, which are still visible at the spot where she was sunk during World War II, the people of Earth covertly construct a giant spaceship. The story's titular "Space Battleship Yamato" is based on this. The ship is identified as the historical Yamato in the English Star Blazers dub but is later renamed the Argo (after the ship of Jason and the Argonauts).
