PLOT

A storm causes an oak tree to lose a limb, which is later discovered by an elderly, childless woodcarver. He carves the branch into a marionette child and gives him the name Pinocchio in order to keep him company (Mokku in the Japanese version, derived from the Japanese word "Moku" meaning wood). The oak tree fairy fulfills Geppetto's desire that evening by giving Pinocchio life, but she can't give him humanity until he has earned it. From there, Pinocchio embarks on several adventures in both his village and the surrounding area, usually involving him either disobeying Cricket's advice and getting into trouble as a result, or trying to do good deeds and someone else taking advantage of his innocence (usually a talking animal or one of his classmates, particularly Franko). However, he always manages to escape any situation he finds himself in with the assistance of Cricket, the Oak Fairy, and his father, either directly or by devising a solution based on advice he is given. He then returns home having learned a significant lesson about life and what it means to be a human.
