PLOT

The story, which is set in a retro-future setting, centers on Mayuko, a recent high school graduate who attends cram school to get ready for college. But since she had nowhere to dwell, she made the decision to reside in a rural bathhouse that was going bankrupt from a lack of patrons. Even worse, she is forced to live with NieA, a member of the "Under 7" class of aliens, the lowest of their kind, who lacks an antenna and is loathed by her fellow aliens. The show makes passing reference to assimilation, alienation, stereotypes, and the contrast between urban and rural life. Mayuko, a young girl who attends a cram school and lives away from her home, exhibits a lot of sorrow. NieA, who is perceived by her fellow aliens as being in a lower social class since she is a physical minority among them, charges anyone who calls her a "dumb no-antenna" or something like of discriminating against her. Other extraterrestrials choose to adopt certain conventional ethnic behaviors; one chooses to dress in Indian attire and operate a convenience store, while another decides to identify with the Chinese Revolution. The brief live-action comic sequence "Dalgit's Tidbit of Indian Information," which concludes each show, continues the idea of the alien outsider.
