PLOT
Shinji Ikari, a teenager, is called to the future city of Tokyo-3 by his estranged father Gendo Ikari, the commander of the secret paramilitary unit Nerv, in 2015, fifteen years after a global catastrophe known as the Second Impact. Shinji sees an Angel, one of a species of enormous hideous monsters whose rebirth was predicted by the Dead Sea Scrolls, engaged in combat with United Nations forces. The only weapons that can stop the Angels from wiping out humanity are Nerv's enormous Evangelion bio-machines, which are synchronized to their pilots' neural systems and have their own force-fields due to the Angels' nearly unbreakable force-fields. Shinji is escorted inside the Nerv base located beneath the city by Nerv officer Misato Katsuragi, where his father coerces him into controlling the Evangelion Unit-01 against the Angel. Shinji, who lacks experience, is swiftly outmatched in the conflict, prompting the Evangelion to lose control and brutally murder the Angel on its own.
