PLOT
Dr. Akamashi, who is described as a scientist who used to work for the government, launches a coup in the Forland Kingdom at the beginning of the narrative. The dying monarch orders Alita, his daughter, to seek out Prince Kaito, who is in charge of a diplomatic mission and its military escort abroad. She leaves the castle and makes her way to a forest near the frontier of the nation. The princess is running when she trips and falls off a cliff onto Falis, a notorious female bounty hunter. The souls of Alita and Falis are switched as a result of the nature of the near-death experience (referred to as a spiritual commutation, or spiritual transmigration in the Anime dub). Alita begs the bounty hunter to defend the Forland kingdom after Falis kills the forest's talisman and offers herself, body and soul, as collateral. Falis concurs and, along with her other bounty hunters, assumes the role of princess of the Forland Kingdom.
