PLOT

To combat the growing threat posed by vampires and their synthetic blood source, the Japanese government establishes a new army unit called "Code Zero" in 1923. All vampires are given the same option by Code Zero: surrender and accept rewards like blood and official registration, or risk extinction. The vampires themselves defy categorization because of their wide variety in status and lack of devotion to one another. Though all were once humans, the majority of them who are bitten pass away right away. While "ordinary" vampires are just stumbling, mindless predators, "noble" vampires are much more intelligent and sophisticated (though no less cruel). Still some are able to maintain their human natures and yearn for a sense of community in a harsh environment. The odd vampires, humans, and other phenomena that the members of Code Zero experience while completing their mission make them reflect on their own identities and goals.
