PLOT
The two leads switch off over the first half of the series. Margaret Burton is a sleepy, clumsy amnesiac residing in Nafrece, a nation modeled after France, while Madlax is one of the most effective special ops agents available for hire in the war-torn Gazth-Sonika. When the worldwide criminal organization Enfant becomes interested in a "picture book" that Margaret likely received from her deceased father, she learns that the book's roots are in Gazth-Sonika. Carrossea Doon, the top agent for Enfant, finds Margaret but leads his bosses in the wrong direction—to Madlax, who has been giving Enfant problems for a while. In the meantime, Vanessa Rene, Margaret's old tutor whose parents perished in the Gazth-Sonikan war,[5] learns that her present company, Bookwald Industries, surreptitiously supports the conflict by arming both sides, and she begins looking into what exactly started it. She follows the trail of her inquiry to Gazth-Sonika, where she hires Madlax as her bodyguard. Together, they unearth evidence that shows Enfant planned the entire battle. They are eventually caught by Enfant and forced into hiding. Back in Nafrece, Margaret makes the decision to assist Vanessa and sets off for Gazth-Sonika with the support of Carrossea Doon and her faithful but occasionally overbearing maid Elenore Baker.
