PLOT
Makoto "Edamame" Edamura decided to lead a life of crime by pickpocketing and defrauding others for a living as a result of a string of tragic incidents. Makoto learns that he was the one who was duped after cheating an apparently oblivious tourist, and to make matters worse, the authorities are now chasing him. He comes into the tourist once more while he is fleeing, and it turns out that he is another con artist named Laurent Thierry. He ends up pursuing him to Los Angeles. Makoto challenges his opponent to a scam-off to see who is the better con artist in an effort to defend his claim to be "Japan's Greatest Swindler." Laurent sets them off in front of a massive home after accepting the challenge, telling them that their intended victim will be the top mafia boss on the West Coast. Great Pretender jumps from city to city as it chronicles Makoto's adventures alongside those of crafty Laurent and his colorful cohorts in the world of high-stakes international fraud. Makoto soon discovers that he received more than he anticipated as his self-declared abilities are often put to the test.
