PLOT
The "Hypergate," an ancient alien artifact that may enable colonization of Mars and near-instantaneous passage to and from Mars, was found on the surface of the Moon in 1972 during the Apollo 17 mission. The Vers Empire is created when Martian settlers unilaterally declare their independence from Earth after finding more alien technology on the planet named "Aldnoah". The Hypergate explodes in 1999 as a result of a conflict on the Moon's surface, splitting the Moon and dispersing its pieces into an asteroid belt around Earth. Later, the Vers Empire declares war on Earth. The Vers Imperial Army's remnants, cut off from Mars, built a number of enormous orbital space stations there and declared a cease-fire. A new invasion on Earth is launched by the Empire and its 37 clans of Orbital Knights in 2014, 15 years after the First Princess of Vers was attacked while on a diplomatic mission to Earth. This time, the Empire is determined to capture Earth permanently.
