The Rising of the Shield Hero is a light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi and illustrated by Seira Minami. The series began publication in 2013 and continues with a 14-volume main series, a 5-volume spin-off series, and a 2-volume prequel series.

The series begins with Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, being summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc and chosen as one of four heroes to fight against Wave of Catastrophe. However, Naofumi is soon betrayed and slandered by the other heroes. This leads to Naofumi living alone and isolated in Melromarc.

Naofumi makes two new friends, Raphtalia and Filo, and together they fight to defeat the Wave of Catastrophe. In the process, Naofumi also learns about his past and the reason why he was chosen as a Shield Hero.

Unlike other series in the isekai genre, the series shows the protagonist going through a difficult struggle and maturing in the process. The series gives viewers a message of hope and courage.
