The Hispaniola sets sail again towards England. The treasure is on board and John Silver is to be tried in England. Silver appears to have come to terms with this, so Captain Smallet asks Dr. Livesey and Mr. Trelawny to put in a good word for him to keep him from being hanged. However, a problem soon arises: the ship has to take on provisions and hire some sailors in the harbor where Jim was freed from the hands of slavers on the outward journey from Silver. The only one eligible for this is Silver. So he is allowed to disembark with Gray on guard. On land, however, Silver worms his way into Gray's trust, gets him drunk on rum, and escapes. He goes to the Hispaniola at night, takes his share of the treasure and drives away unnoticed with his wife, who was waiting for him in the port.
