The Hispaniola drifts away from the island in the storm. All the pirates on board are dead and Jim is alone on board with Captain Silver. Ironically, he is now dependent on his archenemy Silver, because the ship threatens to sink in the storm. Both repair the leaks in the ship's hull until they are completely exhausted. Then Hans, believed dead, appears. Still insane, he doesn't recognize Jim and Silver and attacks them with a saber. In the fight, Captain Silver falls overboard and is swept away by the raging sea. Hans now attacks Jim, who defends himself with the last of his strength, whereby Hans also goes overboard and sinks into the turbulent sea.
