Matt Engarde was an action star who played the titular character in Global Studios' The Nickel Samurai, the character was crowned the Hero of Heroes Super Hero at the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix. He was the defendant in Farewell my Turnabout (the 4th case in Justice for All). Matt had an intense rivalry with the victim, Juan Corrida between their respective characters, though its implied Matt is the one who usually comes out on top. Both shows were held at the exact same time each week. Matt Engarde's motto is "Refreshing like a spring breeze", and relies on his manager Adrian Andrews to manage his schedule. Matt Engarde hired the assassin Shelly de Killer to murder Juan Corrida and force Phoenix Wright into defending him with a ransom by kidnapping Maya Fey. It's believed that because of Matt's threatening and abuse of Celeste Impax (changed to Celeste Andrews in the anime) for her relationship with Juan Corrida is what led to her eventual suicide. Matt's motive for hiring was to keep his reputation from being tarnished due to Juan wanting to reveal the truth about Matt in the after-show press conference. He collected leverage on Shelly in order to frame him if he decided to hold Juans assassination against him.
