The Nocturnal Community Relations Division is a group of investigators who focus on crimes involving frightening supernatural monsters of the night that are invisible to regular people. Arata Miyako, a young and innocent member of the division, is tasked with working in the division's Shinjuku Ward Office, where he meets Theo Himezuka and Kyouichi Sakaki. Arata finds himself on a mission on his first night, when he is surprised to learn that not only do all the supernatural beings he had previously assumed to be fiction truly exist, but also that he is the only person who is able to understand their non-human dialect. The surprises for Arata do not stop there; later that evening, he encounters a legendary being known as a Tengu who refers to him as the renowned exorcist from the Heian era, Abe no Seimei. Unfamiliar with the exorcist, Arata ignores it and keeps working with his team, using his special talent to help them resolve their cases. Arata, who is frequently mistaken for Abe no Seimei by occult creatures and quickly gains notoriety for his special skill while working, becomes curious about his origins and devotes more time to solving cases involving the occult creatures he comes across once he learns of a certain connection between himself and the exorcist. Arata will soon discover, though, that dealing with supernatural beings is not as easy as he had initially believed, as danger starts to play a crucial role in his day-to-day discoveries and his talent starts to offer an unanticipated problem.
